About HPSD
Hyde Park School of Dance offers dancers of all ages and skill levels training in ballet, modern, jazz, and hip hop dance. Founded in 1993, Hyde Park School of Dance is among the oldest institutions for dance instruction on the South Side, and is regarded citywide as both an esteemed children's non-profit and a reputable contributor to Chicago's dance community.
Here, training of the highest caliber by instructors who are active professional dancers meets untold potential for involvement made possible by the school's charitable outreach and scholarship program. At Hyde Park School of Dance, we believe all children should be afforded the opportunity to reap the benefits of a dance education - the discipline it instills, the sense of achievement and increased self-confidence it affords, the chance to work together as a group and to focus independently on contributing one's personal best, the outlet for expressing oneself creatively while simultaneously strengthening body and mind. To do this, we award thousands of dollars a year in needs-based scholarships to dancers attending classes at our school. Additionally, our outreach program puts qualified instructors directly in the field through schools and parks programs, giving kids who might not have otherwise been exposed to a structured dance class the chance to see how great it feels to combine athleticism and artistry in a positive and encouraging environment.
Students join our program at all ages and skill levels. Our student body is diverse and welcoming - there is a place in our program for dancers of every shape and size, toddlers and adults and everyone in between, for the seven-year-old with six years of dance experience and the sixteen-year-old newcomer alike. With a wide array of classes and four enrollment periods a year, we make it easy to get started at Hyde Park School of Dance. Please visit our enrollment page if you are interested in learning more about joining our program.
In addition to classes, HPSD offers its dancers a variety of supplemental dance opportunities. Annual performances include our auditioned production of The Nutcracker and the school-wide Spring Concert. Dedicated young dancers have the opportunity to audition for our performance-driven youth company, where they strive for personal improvement to move through the ranks of its three levels. Students interested in learning the art of dance instruction have the opportunity to volunteer as teachers' assistants for younger kids' classes, or to join our structured Teacher Trainee Program, both of which are completely cost-free for all participants. Every summer we offer a variety of week-long intensives, and dancers participating in our youth company or scholarship programs are guided through civic engagement by volunteering around Hyde Park, assisting with outreach projects and performing at neighborhood events, and within the school, fostering a sense of community and providing positive role models for younger dancers. The variety of opportunities for engagement at HPSD churns out some of the most disciplined and well-rounded young people we have had the pleasure of knowing!
